Not far from Newcastle in the North East is the Blagdon Estate which has been producing coal from open cast mines since 1943. The coal is low in sulphur and very high quality. Most of it is used locally supporting both businesses and jobs.
The vehicles used to extract both the spoil and the coal are typically huge – and remind me of the bright yellow Tonka toys that I had as a kid.
